Abstract :
PURPOE: To decribe the chronic ue of high doe of intravitreal ganciclovir, in combination with focarnet, for the treatment of cytomegaloviru retiniti.
METHOD: A 31-year-old man with human immunodeficiency viru (HIV) infection and unilateral active cytomegaloviru retiniti wa treated with ecalating intravitreal injection of ganciclovir (up to 3.0 mg twice a week) in combination with focarnet (up to 2.4 mg twice a week) over the coure of approximately 1 year.
REULT: Complete regreion of the retiniti wa obtained with high doe of intravitreal ganciclovir and focarnet. Viual acuity in the affected eye remained 20/20 throughout the coure of therapy. No ganciclovir retinal toxicity wa identified.
CONCLUION: High doe of intravitreal ganciclovir in combination with focarnet can be well tolerated and may be required to uccefully control cytomegaloviru retiniti in ome patient.
