Abstract
PURPOE: To compare the retinal nerve fiber layer thickne in eye with idiopathic macular hole and age-matched normal control uing canning laer polarimeter.
METHOD: The retinal nerve fiber layer thickne wa meaured in 40 eye of 40 conecutive patient with idiopathic macular hole (tage 1, 10 eye; tage 2, eight eye; tage 3, 15 eye; tage 4, even eye) and 40 eye of 40 age-matched normal control with a canning laer polarimeter. The retinal nerve fiber layer thickne within a 10-pixel-wide ellipe located concentrically with the dik and located 1.5-dik diameter from the center of the dik wa meaured. The mean overall retinal nerve fiber layer thickne of the peripapillary retina, four 90-degree quadrant, and 16 equal ector of every 22.5 degree wa calculated for both group. The retinal nerve fiber layer thickne in the two group wa tatitically compared.
REULT: The mean retinal nerve fiber layer thickne meaurement for the overall peripapillary retina and for three of the four 90-degree quadrant wa not ignificantly different between the two group. However, the temporal 90-degree quadrant wa ignificantly thinner in the macular hole group (47.2 veru 54.6 μm, P = .026). For the 16 ector of 22.5 degree, the lower three ector of the four ector in the temporal quadrant were thinner in the macular hole group (P < .05).
CONCLUION: The retinal nerve fiber layer thickne of the papillomacular area i thinner in eye with idiopathic macular hole than that in normal eye. The progreive thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer thickne a the tage of the macular hole advance may ugget that urgery hould be done at the earliet tage.
