Indocyanine green taining and removal of internal limiting membrane in macular hole urgery: hitology and outcome

PURPOE: To report the urgical technique, outcome, and hitologic finding involving indocyanine green taining and removal of internal limiting membrane in primary macular hole urgery. METHOD: Propectively, conecutive patient with idiopathic macular hole or myopic macular hole with retinal detachment were recruited. After par plana vitrectomy and epiretinal membrane removal, the internal limiting membrane wa tained and removed. The pecimen were tained uing hematoxylin and eoin and periodic acid-chiff. Immunohitochemical taining wa alo performed for glial fibrillary acidic protein, vimentin, type I and type IV collagen, and actin. REULT: Among 10 patient (10 eye) in the tudy, nine eye had tage 3 or 4 macular hole. Four of them had chronic macular hole. The tenth patient had retinal detachment reulting from a myopic macular hole. Potoperatively, all cae had cloure of macular hole without an elevated edge and the retina wa attached. even patient had improvement of 2 or more nellen line, wherea viual acuity remained the ame for the other three patient. In ix eye in which complete hitologic examination were feaible, internal limiting membrane wa confirmed and two eye alo had a mall amount of epiretinal membrane. Myofibrocyte in internal limiting membrane, either cattered or a a ingle layer, were found in three cae. CONCLUION: Removal of indocyanine green-tained internal limiting membrane around idiopathic macular hole or myopic macular hole with retinal detachment i confirmed with hitology and may contribute to macular hole cloure and retinal reattachment
