  • Abstract
    PURPOE: To examine the relationhip between coffee and caffeine conumption and the 5-year incidence of early age-related maculopathy and it component leion, oft inditinct druen or pigmentary abnormalitie. DEIGN: A propective cohort tudy conducted from 1988 to 1995 with an average follow-up of 4.8 year. METHOD: Data from baeline and 5-year follow-up examination were analyzed for Beaver Dam Eye tudy participant (n = 3435). The Wiconin Age-Related Maculopathy Grading ytem wa ued to ae the preence and everity of early age-related maculopathy. REULT: Men were more likely to be coffee and caffeine drinker than were women. For both men and women, coffee and caffeine intake decreaed with age. Coffee and caffeine conumption were not aociated with the 5-year incidence of early age-related maculopathy, oft inditinct druen, or pigmentary abnormalitie. CONCLUION: Neither a hitory of coffee nor caffeine conumption i aociated with incident early age-related maculopathy
