Effect of cataract extraction with intraocular len placement on canning laer polarimetry of the peripapillary nerve fiber layer

PURPOE: To determine the effect of cataract extraction with intraocular len placement on canning laer polarimetry of the peripapillary nerve fiber layer. DEIGN: Cohort tudy. METHOD: Thirty-four eye of 33 patient undergoing phacoemulification cataract urgery with intraocular len were imaged uing the GDx Nerve Fiber Analyzer within 4 week before and at leat 4 week after cataract urgery. Preoperative and potoperative mean image were compared. The effect of cataract everity and type, and intraocular len material, were alo examined. REULT: Comparion of preoperative and potoperative mean canning laer polarimetry meaurement revealed that eye in which acrylic intraocular lene (n = 11) were placed had a ignificant increae in canning laer polarimetry for the total band circumference, and uperior, inferior, and naal quadrant (P ≤ .041). Placement of ilicone (n = 15) and polymethylmethacrylate (n = 8) intraocular lene did not reult in tatitically ignificant change in canning laer polarimetry meaurement. However, eight of 34 eye (23.5%) had change of 15% or more potoperatively in the total circumference meaurement, including eye with acrylic, ilicone, and polymethylmethacrylate intraocular lene. CONCLUION: Cataract extraction with intraocular len wa aociated with a tatitically ignificant change in mean canning laer polarimetry value in eye that received an acrylic intraocular len. In individual patient, clinically important change (15% or greater) in canning laer polarimetry meaurement were not uncommon irrepective of intraocular len type. New baeline canning laer polarimetry meaurement may be warranted in eye that undergo cataract extraction with intraocular len.
