Ue of perfluorohexyloctane a a long-term internal tamponade agent in complicated retinal detachment urgery

PURPOE: To report the ue of perfluorohexyloctane, a liquid emifluorinated alkane that i heavier than water, a an internal tamponade agent in urgery for complicated retinal detachment. DEIGN: A conecutive interventional cae erie from three tudy center. METHOD: In 23 conecutive eye (23 patient, 19 men and four women, mean ± tandard deviation (D) age of 58.5 year ± 16.1) perfluorohexyloctane wa ued for long-term internal tamponade. Included were eye with complicated retinal detachment involving the lower two quadrant of the fundu. Excluded were patient with dieae in the fellow eye or evere ytemic dieae. A par plana vitrectomy wa performed, including membrane peeling and retinotomy where neceary. REULT: The mean duration for perfluorohexyloctane being left in itu wa 76 day (D 37.64) (range, 35–202 day). Four week following the removal of perfluorohexyloctane 19 of the 23 patient had total reattachment of the retina; three eye had a recurrence of retinal detachment. One patient wa lot to follow-up. The mean follow-up after perfluorohexyloctane removal wa 97 day (range, 48 to 169 day). Cataract formation or progreion wa noted in nine of the 10 eye. There were two cae with high intraocular preure. Diperion into mall droplet wa oberved a early a 3 day potoperatively in three of the 23 patient. At leat 12 of the 23 patient had an obviou diperion by the time of perfluorohexyloctane removal. There wa no ign of optic atrophy, retinal necroi, or retinal vacular occluion. CONCLUION: Perfluorohexyloctane wa tolerated a a long-term internal tamponade agent without obviou ign of damage to the retina or optic dik. Of all the complication noted, the mot common wa that of diperion of the perfluorohexyloctane bubble into droplet.
