Abstract :
PURPOE: To decribe hitorical and preenting feature of infant with the onet of eotropia in early infancy to provide a better undertanding of the clinical pectrum of the diorder.
DEIGN: Propective multicenter cohort tudy.
METHOD: Eligibility criteria included age at enrollment 4 to < 20 week and an eotropia at near meauring at leat 20 prim diopter (pd). Hitorical information wa elicited from the parent or guardian. The eotropia wa meaured at near and characterized a contant, variable, or intermittent.
REULT: 175 infant were enrolled. Their average age at enrollment wa 97 ± 26 day. The eotropia wa characterized a contant in 56% of the patient, variable in 25%, and intermittent in 19%. Forty-nine percent of the deviation were ≥ 40 pd. Mot of the larger angle deviation were contant wherea the majority of the maller angle deviation were intermittent or variable. The majority of patient firt een after 12 week of age had contant deviation (65%), wherea the majority een before 12 week of age had intermittent or variable deviation (57%). At enrollment, amblyopia wa diagnoed in 19% of patient.
CONCLUION: The clinical preentation of eotropia in early infancy how more variation in the eotropia’ ize and character than ha been previouly appreciated. Only a minority of the infant who are diagnoed to have eotropia before 20 week of age have the commonly accepted profile for congenital eotropia of a large-angle contant deviation. Amblyopia frequently develop, o an evaluation for amblyopia hould be an integral part of the examination of an infant with eotropia.
