Abstract :
PURPOE: To determine the probability of pontaneou reolution of eotropia with onet in early infancy. DEIGN: Propective multicenter cohort tudy. METHOD: Eligibility criteria included age at enrollment 4 to < 20 week and an eotropia meauring at leat 20 prim diopter (pd). The primary outcome meaure wa ocular alignment at 28 to 32 week of age. The eotropia wa claified a reolved when there wa a mialignment of 0 to 8 pd at the outcome examination either with or without pectacle correction. REULT: Outcome data were available for 170 of the 175 enrolled patient. The eotropia wa claified a reolved in 46 of the 170 patient (27%, 95% confidence interval = 21% to 34%). Mot of the reolved cae had an intermittent or variable deviation at enrollment. Reolution occurred in only one of 42 cae that had a contant eotropia ≥ 40 pd on both the baeline and firt follow-up examination and had a refractive error ≤+ 3.00 diopter. In another patient, who had an eotropia of 35 pd at baeline and 40 pd at the outcome examination, the eotropia reolved ubequent to the outcome examination. CONCLUION: Eotropia with onet in early infancy frequently reolve in patient firt examined at le than 20 week of age when the deviation i < 40 pd in ize and i intermittent or variable. Cae with a contant deviation ≥ 40 pd preenting after 10 week of age have a low likelihood of pontaneou reolution. Our reult can be ued to define a clinical profile for which peritence of the eotropia i ufficiently likely that urgical correction at 3 to 4 month of age could reaonably be conidered.
