Abstract :
PURPOE: To report the hitopathologic and ultratructural feature of three cae of interlenticular opacification (ILO) between piggyback intraocular lene. DEIGN: Interventional cae erie with clinicopathologic correlation. METHOD: Three pair of acrylic piggyback lene were explanted due to decreae in viual acuity aociated with ILO. Lene were evaluated with gro and light microcopic examination in all cae. The anterior len in one cae wa examined with canning electron microcopy and energy diperive x-ray pectrocopy. REULT: The material opacifying the interlenticular pace wa compoed motly of retained/regenerative cortical material in all cae. From the peripheral interface toward the central interface, the opacifying material changed a the interlenticular pace wa progreively narrower. The material attached to the peripheral interface, where the interlenticular pace wa wider, wa very thick. At the midperipheral interface, the thick cortical material wa broken into multiple globule due to liquefactive degeneration. At the paracentral zone, compreion of the globule formed a flat, compact layer of an amorphou material. At the central interface (contact zone), almot no material could be found between the piggyback lene. CONCLUION: Analye of ILO cae where all the component of the opacifying material were in itu allowed u to confirm that the pathogenei of thi complication i imilar to that of poterior capule opacification; thu, careful removal of len epithelial cell and cortical material i mandatory in piggyback implantation.
