Abstract :
PURPOE: To etimate the prevalence and identify factor related to late-onet tranconjunctival aqueou oozing and point leak from functioning bleb after trabeculectomy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or mitomycin C.
DEIGN: Cro-ectional tudy
METHOD: ETTING: The tudy took place at the outpatient clinic of the Department of Ophthalmology, Univerity of Tokyo Graduate chool of Medicine (Tokyo, Japan). Four hundred three conecutive patient (403 eye) with functional bleb at leat 3 month after previouly performed trabeculectomy were examined between December 1997 and February 1998. The eidel tet wa performed with extended obervation up to 15 econd. Oozing wa identified a tranconjunctival aqueou egre without interruption of the conjunctival tiue or aqueou tream on the bleb wall. Logitic regreion analye of oozing and point leak in 331 eye with an avacular area were performed uing independent variable, including age, gender, glaucoma diagnoi, prior inciional urgery, antimetabolite ue, combined cataract urgery, potoperative follow-up period, intraocular preure (IOP), concurrent glaucoma therapy, bleb ize, and avacular area ize.
REULT: Of 403 eye, 48 eye (11.9%) had oozing and 8 eye (2.0%) had point leak. Intraocular preure wa ignificantly lower and an avacular area wa more frequent in eye with oozing or leak than in eye without (P < .001). Logitic regreion analyi revealed that oozing wa ignificantly more common after ue of 5-FU than mitomycin C (P = .024), wherea point leak wa aociated with a larger avacular area (P = .045).
CONCLUION: After trabeculectomy with antimetabolite, tranconjunctival oozing i much more frequent than point leak. Oozing wa ignificantly aociated with the ue of 5-FU and point leak with a larger avacular area in the bleb
