Abstract
PURPOE: To invetigate the correlation between angiotenin II (AII) or vacular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) level in the vitreou fluid and the everity of diabetic macular edema (DME).
DEIGN: A cae-control tudy.
METHOD: Vitreou fluid ample were obtained at the time of vitreoretinal urgery from 20 eye of 20 patient with DME, 6 eye of 6 diabetic patient without retinopathy, and 14 eye of 14 nondiabetic patient. The VEGF level in vitreou fluid and plama were determined by enzyme-linked immunoorbent aay, while AII level were meaured by radioimmunoaay.
REULT: The vitreou concentration of VEGF wa ignificantly higher in patient with DME than in nondiabetic patient or diabetic patient without retinopathy (P < .0001 and P < .0001, repectively). Vitreou level of AII were alo higher in patient with DME than in nondiabetic patient (P = .0082). The vitreou concentration of AII wa ignificantly correlated with that of VEGF (P = .0022). Vitreou concentration of both AII and VEGF were ignificantly higher in patient with hyperfluorecent DME than in thoe with hypofluorecent (P = .0228 and P = .0068, repectively).
CONCLUION: We found that the level of both AII and VEGF were elevated in the vitreou fluid of patient with hyperfluorecein DME. Our reult ugget that both AII and VEGF are related to the increae of vacular permeability in DME.
