Iri color and incident cataract and cataract urgery: The Blue Mountain Eye tudy

PURPOE: To ae whether an aociation exit between iri color and the incidence of cataract and cataract urgery. DEIGN: Population-baed cohort tudy. METHOD: The Blue Mountain Eye tudy examined 3654 predominantly Caucaian participant aged 49+ year during 1992–1994, and then 2335 urvivor (75.1%) after 5 year. Iri color wa determined by comparion with four tandard photograph. lit-lamp and retro-illumination len photograph were graded for preence and everity of cortical, nuclear, or poterior ubcapular cataract. Incident cataract urgery wa recorded by hitory and from the photograph. REULT: Participant with dark brown iri color had an increaed incidence of nuclear cataract, odd ratio (OR) 1.8, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.2 to 2.8, and cataract urgery (OR, 2.5; CI, 1.4–4.2) in multivariate model, compared with participant with blue iri color. CONCLUION: Incidence data from thi tudy upport previou cro-ectional finding linking dark brown iri color with age-related cataract.
