Abstract :
PURPOE: To report a patient with ocular ichemic yndrome due to an internal carotid artery tenoi in whom we confirmed improved retinal blood flow noninvaively after carotid endarterectomy.
DEIGN: Obervational cae report.
METHOD: Retinal flowmetry.
REULT: In a 72-year-old hypertenive man with a tranient ichemic attack including dygraphia, carotid angiography revealed approximately 90% tenoi of the left internal carotid artery. tandard carotid endarterectomy wa performed. Potoperatively, good patency of the left internal carotid artery wa confirmed by magnetic reonance angiography. We meaured tiue blood flow in the fundu of each eye uing a Heidelberg retina flowmeter before and after endarterectomy. Preoperative meaurement howed reduction of blood flow in the left fundu, while value 3 month after urgery indicated a ignificant improvement of blood flow (P < .05, one-factor analyi of variance [ANOVA]).
CONCLUION: Retinal flowmetry can noninvaively detect difference in retinal blood flow between eye in a patient with unilateral internal carotid artery tenoi and alo ae the improvement of retinal blood flow after carotid endarterectomy.
