DEIGN: Conecutive obervational cae erie of three patient with unilateral traumatic macular hole who conulted medical taff at the Kanai Medical Univerity between 1997 and 2000. METHOD: Three patient who utained unilateral blunt trauma to the eye and developed traumatic macular hole were followed with ophthalmic examination, fundu photography, fluorecein angiography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT). REULT: Cae 1 wa an 11-year-old boy. He had neither a macular hole nor prominent macular edema at hi firt conultation, but a macular hole opened 3 week later. OCT howed macular edema and a full-thickne macular hole. The tiue around the edge of the macular hole protruded inward toward the center and finally cloed pontaneouly 18 week later. Cae 2 wa a 19-year-old man. He had a tiny rough-edged macular hole at hi firt conultation with a local ophthalmologit. OCT howed macular hole enlargement and worening of the macular edema during follow up. The macular hole finally cloed 4 month after injury. Cae 3 wa a 15-year-old boy. He had a tiny rough-edged macular hole at hi firt conultation with a local ophthalmologit. The macular hole finally cloed 6 month after injury. CONCLUION: Macular hole can be a reult of evere damage from ocular concuion or damage to the retina. For 6 month following injury, traumatic macular hole hould probably be oberved rather than urgically repaired, becaue of the poibility that the macular hole may cloe pontaneouly.
