Abstract :
PURPOE: To compare the afety and efficacy of intraoperative 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or Intraoperative mitomycin C (MMC) in eye undergoing primary trabeculectomy.
DEIGN: Propective double-maked randomized clinical trial.
METHOD: One hundred fifteen eye of 103 patient with uncontrolled intraocular preure (IOP) depite maximally tolerated medical therapy or laer were propectively randomized in a double-maked fahion to one of two treatment group in a ingle intitution etting. ubject’ eye underwent primary trabeculectomy with either topical 5-FU (50 mg/ml for 5 minute) or topical MMC (0.2 mg/ml for 2 minute). Primary outcome meaure included the number of eye achieving target preure of 21, 18, 15, and 12 mm Hg at 6 and 12 month potoperatively. econdary outcome meaure included IOP, bet-corrected viual acuity, complication, and intervention.
REULT: Of the 115 eye, 57 received 5-FU while 58 received MMC. A target IOP of 21 mm Hg at 6 month wa achieved in 53 of 56 (95%) eye in the 5-FU group and 54 of 57 (95%) eye in the MMC group (P = 1.00). At 12 month, 45 of 48 (94%) eye in the 5-FU group met a target IOP of 21 mm Hg while 48 of 54 (89%) eye in the MMC group did (P = .49). The mot common complication in each group were peritent choroidal effuion and bleb leak.
CONCLUION: Our tudy ugget that intraoperative topical 5-FU i at leat a effective a intraoperative topical MMC in reducing IOP of eye undergoing primary trabeculectomy
