Abstract :
PURPOE: The aim of thi tudy i to evaluate the functional outcome in a group of patient treated with full macular tranlocation (FMT) with 360-degree retinotomy for treatment of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) with ubfoveal choroidal neovacularization. DEIGN: Conecutive interventional cae erie. METHOD: Fifty conecutive eye (50 patient) with ARMD and ubfoveal neovacularization who underwent a FMT in our department from January 1999 to July 2000 are included in thi tudy. Compenatory mucle urgery, a decribed by Eckardt and aociate, wa performed on all the eye. The median follow-up i 21 month (range, 12 to 36; D, 5.4). REULT: The bet-corrected potoperative viual acuity (BCVA) wa improved by 2 or more nellen line in 33 eye (66%) and remained table (±1 line) in 14 eye (28%). Only 3 eye (6%) experienced a deterioration of the BCVA of 2 or more line. The final BCVA wa 20/50 or better in 32% of the cae; only 8 eye (16%) had a final BCVA < 20/200. Thirty-four (68%) patient are able to read newpaper print (3.3/10) with normal (+3 diopter to +4 diopter) or increaed (+5 diopter to +8 diopter) reading ad. Other patient are able to read with magnifying ytem. Complication included proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) in 9 eye (18%), recurrent choroidal neovacularization in 5 eye (10%), diplopia in 3 eye (6%), choroidal hemorrhage in 2 eye (4%), macular hole in 1 eye, and temporary hypotony in 1 eye. CONCLUION: A 68% of the patient in the tudy group regained reading viion with reading glae, FMT can be conidered an effective approach in cae of ubfoveal choroidal neovacularization. Further invetigation are neceary to determine which patient will have the mot benefit from thi complex therapeutic method.
