Reult of urgery for bilateral cataract aociated with enory nytagmu in children

PURPOE: To report the outcome of cataract urgery in children with bilateral cataract and preoperative enory nytagmu. DEIGN: Interventional cae erie. METHOD: Retropective review of 95 children who underwent urgery for bilateral cataract aociated with enory nytagmu. All patient lacked other tructural ocular defect or neurologic abnormalitie and were old enough at lat follow-up to cooperate with recognition viual acuity teting. Outcome parameter tudied were bet-corrected potoperative viual acuity of the better eye and potoperative reduction or elimination of nytagmu. REULT: Mean age at urgery ± D wa 2.0 ± 2.6 year (range, 1 month to 13 year). Mean follow-up wa 6.1 ± 3.4 year (range, 2 month to 15 year). Bet-corrected potoperative viual acuity of the better eye ranged from 20/25 to counting finger and wa 20/60 or better in 44 (46%), between 20/60 and 20/200 in 37 (39%), and 20/200 or wore in 14 (15%). Preoperative recognition viual acuity data were available for 16 of the older patient, and 5 or more line of viual acuity improvement occurred in 5 (31%) including children a old a 9 year at the time of urgery. Nytagmu wa reduced or eliminated potoperatively in 38 (40%). Mild, a oppoed to evere, preoperative nytagmu wa predictive of both a better viual acuity outcome (P = .004) and reduced or eliminated nytagmu potoperatively (P = .02). CONCLUION: Good or even excellent viual acuity can be achieved after cataract urgery in ome children with bilateral cataract and enory nytagmu, and the nytagmu ometime improve potoperatively
