Macular infarction after tranpupillary thermotherapy for ubfoveal choroidal neovacularization in age-related macular degeneration

PURPOE: To report the complication of macular infarction after tranpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) for the treatment of ubfoveal choroidal neovacularization (CNV) due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). DEIGN: Interventional cae report. METHOD: Among 107 conecutive patient with ubfoveal CNV due to AMD, a 73-year-old woman with recurrent ubfoveal claic choroidal neovacularization and a 76-year-old man with ubfoveal occult choroidal neovacularization with adjacent area of geographic retinal pigment epithelium atrophy noted a evere decreae in viual acuity and photopia within hour of undergoing TTT. REULT: Both patient had marked whitening of the macula clinically and cloure of the perifoveal capillarie on fluorecein angiography. Immediately after treatment their viual acuity decreaed from 20/200 to 6/200 and from 20/400 to 2/200, repectively. everal month later, all exudation had reolved and their viual acuity had tabilized at 20/100 and 20/200, repectively. CONCLUION: Macular infarction i a rare complication that occurred in two of 107 patient undergoing TTT for ubfoveal CNV due to AMD. The preence of geographic retinal pigment epithelium atrophy or a previou laer treatment car in the macular region may predipoe patient to thi complication.
