Abstract :
PURPOE: To invetigate the impact of graphical uer interface creen feature on computer tak performance in patient with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). DEIGN: Interventional cae erie. METHOD: Eighteen patient with viual impairment due to AMD were recruited from the Bacom Palmer Eye Intitute Low Viion Clinic. Each patient underwent evaluation of viual acuity uing the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy tudy protocol, contrat enitivity uing a Pelli-Robon chart, binocular imultaneou viual field uing the Eterman program on an automated perimeter, and color viion uing Farnworth D-15. Each ubject then completed computer icon identification tak while the following creen feature of the graphical uer interface were varied: ize of icon diplayed, icon et ize (number of icon diplayed), and background color. Each patient performed all 125 computer tak with each of five icon ize (9.2 mm, 14.6 mm, 23.2 mm, 36.8 mm, 58.3 mm), each of five icon et ize (2, 3, 4, 5, 6), and each of five different background color (black, white, red, green, blue) in a randomly ordered fahion. Relationhip between computer tak performance (accuracy and peed) and graphical uer interface creen feature were tudied. REULT: Icon ize and icon et ize are ignificantly aociated with computer tak accuracy (P < .001), wherea background color i not a ignificant predictor of tak accuracy (P = .63). The impact of icon ize on accuracy i nonlinear, with the data indicating that no additional improvement in accuracy i aociated with increaing the icon ize beyond 23.2 mm. The impact of icon et ize on accuracy i linear, with a maller icon et ize ignificantly aociated with greater computer accuracy. A larger icon ize i ignificantly aociated with a horter time to tak completion (P = .001); thi relationhip i largely linearly related to icon ize. There wa no ignificant impact of background color (P = .11) or et ize (P = .37) on time to tak completion. CONCLUION: Modification of graphical uer interface deign may permit improved computer tak performance among patient with viual impairment due to AMD.
