Abstract :
Purpoe The aim of thi tudy wa to evaluate the diagnotic uefulne of the combined ue of frequency-doubling technology (FDT) perimetry and polarimetry of the retinal nerve fiber layer. Deign Cro-ectional tudy. Method eventy ocular hypertenive patient (normal optic dik and tandard perimetry, elevated intraocular preure [>21 mm Hg]), 59 patient with “preperimetric” open-angle glaucoma (glaucomatou optic dik atrophy, elevated intraocular preure [>21 mm Hg], no viual field defect in tandard perimetry), 105 patient with “perimetric” open-angle glaucoma (glaucomatou optic dik atrophy and clearly marked viual field defect), and 73 control ubject had FDT creening (protocol: C-20-5) and polarimetric meaurement (GDx). Criteria for excluion: optic dik larger than 4 mm2, media opacitie, patient younger than 33 year or older than 66 year. None of the ubject had earlier FDT perimetry. One eye of each patient and control ubject entered the tatitical evaluation. Databae and tatitical oftware were ued for cae-wie recalculation of all mied localized probability level to create a FDT creening core. Reult At a predefined pecificity of 94.5% in control eye, dicrimination between “perimetric” glaucoma and normal ubject i uperior uing the FDT perimetry (enitivity = 84.8%) in comparion to polarimetry (enitivity = 63.8%), wherea enitivity i imilar with both method in “preperimetric” patient (GDx, FDT: 25.4%). In everal cae, patient claified a glaucomatou by the GDx are not the ame patient a identified by the FDT perimetry. Therefore, a two-dimenional dicrimination analyi can increae correct poitive claification. Uing a linear combination of the preent FDT creening core and polarimetry (“the number”), 92.4% of “perimetric” glaucoma eye and 44.1% of “preperimetric” glaucoma eye have been claified a glaucomatou. Concluion Joint uage of polarimetry and FDT perimetry indicate that a combination of different technique which can uncover different glaucoma propertie, might be helpful in early glaucoma detection.
