Abstract :
Purpoe
To report the prevalence of foveal retinal detachment without macular hole in a large number of highly myopic eye uing optical coherence tomography (OCT), and to clarify the demographic characteritic aociated with foveal retinal detachment in thee eye.
Deign
A conecutive, propective, obervational cae erie.
Method
In 134 eye of 78 conecutive patient with high myopia (refractive error of –8 diopter or more), we performed complete ophthalmic examination and tudied cro-ectional image of the macula with OCT. The patient were divided into two group according to the preence (group 1, N = 78 eye of 45 patient) or abence (group 2, N = 56 eye of 33 patient) of poterior taphyloma. lit-lamp examination with a Goldmann three-mirror len indicated that none of the eye had a macular hole.
Reult
In even of 78 eye (9.0%) with poterior taphyloma (group 1), OCT revealed foveal retinal detachment. Two of the even eye had foveal retinochii. Optical coherence tomography revealed no retinal detachment or retinochii in any eye without poterior taphyloma (group 2). Viual acuity of the even eye with foveal retinal detachment ranged from 20/40 to 20/200. Two of the even eye had viual acuity 20/50 or better. No patient complained of recent, progreive viual impairment. All even eye with foveal retinal detachment had evere myopic fundu change (focal chorioretinal atrophy or bare clera).
Concluion
In highly myopic eye with poterior taphyloma, the prevalence of foveal retinal detachment without macular hole wa 9.0%. In eye with thi type of retinal detachment, viual acuity varie and foveal retinal detachment tend to be mied on routine examination. Periodic examination uing OCT i recommended for highly myopic eye with evere myopic degenerative change and poterior taphyloma.
