Abstract :
Purpoe To decribe a newly developed tabilized retinal laer Doppler intrument, to report the reproducibility of retinal blood flow meaurement, and to preent example of it clinical application. Deign Experimental tudy. Method The intraeion, intereion, and interoberver reproducibility of retinal blood flow meaurement obtained uing the Canon Laer Blood Flowmeter model CLBF 100 wa aeed. Intraeion: the coefficient of variation (CV) for repeated meaurement (5X) of retinal veel diameter (D), time-average centerline blood velocity (Vav), and blood flow (F) were calculated at 18 ite along temporal retinal arterie and 18 ite along temporal retinal vein uing both eye in ix healthy volunteer. Intereion: the correlation coefficient and average difference between two et of meaurement at the ame 36 retinal ite made by one examiner on two different day were calculated. Interoberver: the correlation coefficient and average difference between two et of meaurement at nine ite (five arterial and four venou) in five eye of five of the volunteer made by two examiner on the ame day were calculated. Reult from two patient, one with branch retinal vein occluion (BRVO), and one with central retinal vein occluion (CRVO), are ued to illutrate abnormal retinal circulatory characteritic. Reult Intraeion: CV (mean ± D) for D, Vav, and F were 5.5% ± 2.2%, 13.1% ± 6.3%, and 13.8% ± 4.7% in arterie and 3.5% ± 2.1%, 11.9% ± 5.9%, and 12.7% ± 5.5% in vein. Intereion/interoberver: trong correlation between meaurement made by one examiner on two different day and by two examiner on the ame day were found in D, Vav, and F. Average difference in F were 16.4% ± 12.8% for intereion and 12.6% ± 7.0% for interoberver comparion. Reult from the patient with BRVO how marked difference in flow characteritic in the affected quadrant compared with an unaffected quadrant in the ame eye, and to the fellow eye. Reult from the patient with CRVO how a dramatic improvement in flow characteritic after clearing of the occluion. Concluion The reproducibility reult and the fact that blood flow i meaured in actual unit of μl/min indicate that the intrument can be ued for reliable comparion of blood flow characterictic at different retinal vacular ite in the ame eye, at comparable ite in both eye, and for comparion between patient and healthy control ubject.
