Iri color and intraocular preure: the Blue Mountain Eye tudy

Purpoe To ae the relationhip between iri color and intraocular preure (IOP). Deign Population-baed, cro-ectional tudy. Method The Blue Mountain Eye tudy examined 3,654 largely Caucaian participant, aged 49 to 97 year, from 1992 to 1994. Information wa collected about glaucoma rik factor, and Goldmann applanation IOP meaurement were taken. Iri color wa aeed by comparing the undilated appearance of each eye with three tandard photograph. Participant who had previou cataract or glaucoma urgery and thoe uing glaucoma medication were excluded. Reult Mean IOP meaurement increaed with increaing grade of iri pigmentation. After imultaneou adjutment for variable aociated with IOP, mean meaurement were 15.92 mm Hg for blue iri color, 16.04 mm Hg for hazel or green, 16.11 mm Hg for tan-brown, and 16.49 mm Hg for dark brown (P for TREND = .001). Concluion Thi tudy demontrate a modet but tatitically ignificant aociation between increaing iri color and IOP.
