Azithromycin v doxycycline in the treatment of incluion conjunctiviti

Purpoe The aim of the tudy wa to compare the efficacy and afety of azithromycin and doxycycline in the treatment of chlamydial conjunctiviti in adult. Deign An open, randomized clinical trial. Method eventy-eight adult patient with incluon conjunctiviti were enrolled in thi multicenter clinical tudy. Patient with chlamydial conjunctiviti a indicated by a poitive direct fluorecent antibody (DFA) tet or cell culture were randomized to receive a ingle 1-g doe of azithromycin or doxycycline, 100 mg twice daily for 10 day. A conjuctival wab for cell culture wa obtained from all patient immediately before the treatment for ubequent confirmation of the preence of chlamydial infection in the central laboratory. Control examination were performed 10 to 12 day and 4 to 6 week after the treatment initiation. Clinical and bacteriological repone to the treatment were evaluated at the lat viit. The occurrence and frequency of advere event were analyzed a well. Reult Of 78 patient enrolled, 51 completed the tudy and were evaluated for efficacy. The main reaon for withdrawal were lack of confirmation of the preence of chlamydial infection by the central laboratory and failure to attend the follow-up viit. Eradication of C. trachomati wa achieved in 23 of 25 (92%) patient treated with azithromycin and in 25 of 26 (96%) patient treated with doxycycline. Clinical cure wa oberved in 15 (60%) and 18 (69%) patient treated with azithromycin and doxycycline, repectively. Both drug were equally well tolerated.
