Abstract :
Purpoe
Pediatric uveiti i rare and ha been reported to caue increaed rate of viual lo compared with adult patient. The reaon for thi are unclear. Only one tudy ha been population–baed, o the effect of referral bia i not known. We examined the pattern of dieae in primary and referral center to etablih the unique characteritic of uveiti in children.
Deign
Cae control tudy.
Method
Retropective, multicenter, obervational tudy of uveiti tarting before the age of 20 year. Two hundred forty-nine patient were recruited from three primary and two referral ophthalmic unit. Age-related difference in type of uveiti and ytemic dieae between hopital were characterized, a were aociation with viual lo.
Reult
The incidence of uveiti in ditrict hopital at le than 16 year of age wa 4.9/100,000: the mot frequent diagnoi wa idiopathic uveiti (78%). In referral cohort the mot frequent diagnoi wa juvenile idiopathic arthriti-aociated uveiti (67%). Other ytemic dieae were rare. The mot frequent type of uveiti at 0 to 7 year of age wa chronic anterior uveiti, poterior uveiti in 8- to 15-year-old, and acute anterior uveiti in 16- to 19-year-old. Viual lo (any eye < 6/12) occurred in 17% and wa not aociated with age, ex, or hopital cohort. It wa mot frequent in poterior uveiti (25%). Treatment variable were independent predictor of viual lo: ytemic treatment 2.2 (1.1– 4.6), urgical intervention 8.2 (3.8–17.6).
Concluion
Idiopathic uveiti wa three time more common in ditrict hopital. Viual lo wa imilar to adult uveiti in thi tudy. The increaed frequency of evere chronic anterior uveiti in children aged 0 to 7 year and poterior uveiti in older children aged 8 to 15 year account for the rate of viual lo een in previou tudie.
