Abstract
Purpoe
To report the everity of ocular injury in even children with traumatic hyphema reulting from the accidental triking of the child in the face with a belt during the adminitration of corporal punihment.
Deign
Obervational cae erie.
Method
We retropectively reviewed the record of all patient (n = 7, aged 4 to 14 year) with traumatic hyphema econdary to belt injurie evaluated by the enior author between 1989 to 2002 at Le Bonheur Children’ Medical Center, a regional pediatric referral hopital in Memphi, Tenneee.
Reult
Anterior egment injurie ranged from mall hyphema with normal intraocular preure and no viion lo to injurie with evere elevation of intraocular preure and permanent, ignificant lo of viion.
Concluion
Ocular injury to a child can reult from trauma inflicted with a belt by a parent or caretaker during corporal punihment and may reult in permanent lo of viion.
