Method The actual volume of variou glaucoma medication or glaucoma medication with redeigned bottle wa determined for mot commercially available ize of the teted product. The drop per milliliter baed on the actual volume and the daily cot of the doage chedule recommended by the manufacturer were compared. The cot of each bottle of medication wa determined from the average wholeale price (AWP) in the United tate. A comparion to 1999 price where applicable will be analyzed to review coting trend. Reult The generic timolol product (range, $0.38– $0.46 per day) were imilar on a cot per day bai v Betimol (anten, Napa Valley, California, UA), Optipranolol (Bauch and Lomb Pharmaceutical, Tampa, Florida, UA) and Timoptic (Merck, Wet Point, Pennylvania, UA). Their percentage cot increae ranged from 5% to 22% ince 1999, except for generic timolol XE gel-forming olution (48%). Betagan (Allergan, Irvine, California, UA), Betoptic (Alcon Laboratorie, Fort Worth, Texa, UA), and Ocupre (Novarti, Duluth, Georgia, UA) ranged from $0.88 to $1.11 per day, and their percentage cot increae ranged from 33% to 53%. ome brand-only product have raied their AWP a greater percentage, including Betoptic (37%), Iopidine (Alcon, Fort Worth, Texa, UA) (50%), Ocupre (Novarti Ophthalmic, Duluth, Georgia, UA) (53%), and Pilopine gel (Alcon, Fort Worth, Texa, UA) (32%).The mean cot per day for the topical carbonic anhydrae inhibitor Azopt (Alcon Laboratorie; $1.33 per day) and Truopt (Merck; $1.05 per day) differed from 1999 when price were almot identical. Coopt (Merck; timolol 0.5% plu dorzolamide 2%, $1.04 per day) wa le than the cot of eparate bottle of a topical carbonic anhydrae inhibitor and a β-blocker.The elective α-2 agonit brimonidine 0.15% with Purite (Alphagan-P, Allergan, 5 ml) twice daily wa $1.29 per day. The protaglandin analog were comparably priced with Lumigan (Allergan) $0.95 per day, Xalatan (Pharmacia and Upjohn, Kalamazoo, Michigan, UA) $1.25 per day, Travatan (Alcon Laboratorie) $1.01 per day, and Recula (Novarti) $0.90 per day. Concluion All generic timolol, Betimol, Optipranolol, Timoptic, and Timoptic XE (Merck) ranged from $0.38 to $0.50 per day. Other β-blocker product were about twice a cotly, ranging from $0.88 to $1.11 per day. Coopt ($1.05 per day) wa le cotly than eparate bottle of a topical β-blocker and a topical carbonic anhydrae inhibitor doed three time daily or twice daily. The protaglandin analog ranged from $0.90 per day (Recula) to $1.25 per day (Xalatan). Newer glaucoma medication exhibit imilar cot per day in many cae, compared with more traditional medication, epecially with greater price increae in older brand-only product.
