Abstract
Purpoe
To report the enitivity and pecificity of B-can ultraonography to detect macular thickening.
Deign
Obervational cae erie.
Method
eventy-even eye of 40 conecutive patient (age range, 7–80 year) in a retinal pecialty practice were examined. A ingle maked ultraound operator performed B-can ultraonography on all eye and graded macular thickening. The final aement of macular thickening wa baed on biomicrocopy finding combined with fluorecein angiography (FA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). The preence or abence of macular thickening a determined by B-can ultraonography wa compared with the final clinical aement, FA finding, and OCT meaurement.
Reult
B-can ultraonography detected macular thickening with a high degree of enitivity (91%) and pecificity (96%). There wa a high degree of agreement between finding on ultraonography and FA (kappa = 0.80). Ultraonographic diagnoi correlated with OCT meaurement for both central macular thickne (r = .65, P < .001) and volume (r = .56, P < .001).
Concluion
Ultraonographic detection of macular thickening correlate with finding on lit-lamp biomicrocopy, FA, and OCT. B-can ultraonography i a potentially ueful technique for aeing macular thickne when biomicrocopy i impoible or when patient cannot tolerate FA or OCT.
