Abstract :
Purpoe
To determine the morphology of macular peudohole (MPH) and the relationhip of morphology to macular function.
Deign
Obervational cae erie.
Method
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) wa performed on 42 eye of 42 conecutive patient with an epiretinal membrane (ERM) and an MPH. The diameter of the MPH, and the thickne of the foveal and parafoveal retina were meaured. Of thee 42 eye, focal macular electroretinogram (FMERG) were recorded from 22 eye of 22 patient with a 15 degree timulu; FMERG were alo recorded with a 5 degree timulu from 9 eye of thee 22 eye.
Reult
In 42 eye, the mean ± tandard deviation (D) diameter (437.7 ± 172.8 μm) and geometrical hape of the MPH were not ignificantly correlated with the viual acuity. The MPH were divided into 2 type from the OCT image at the bae of MPH; group A had normal thickne (100–199 μm; n = 29), and group B (n = 13) had thicknee of ≥ 200 μm, or thickne < 100 μm, or irregular bae. The viual acuity in group A (logarithm of the minimum angle of reolution [log MAR] mean ± D: .083 ± .144) wa ignificantly better than group B (log MAR, .407 ± .212, P < .0001). There wa a ignificant reduction in the amplitude of all component of FMERG elicited by the 15 degree timulu in the affected eye (mean ± E, A-wave: 1.26 ± .12 μv, B-wave: 3.07 ± .27 μv, ocillatory potential: 1.23 ± .25 μv) compared with the normal fellow eye (A-wave: 1.58 ± .13 μv, B-wave: 4.14 ± .27 μv, ocillatory potential: 2.35 ± .29 μv). A ignificant correlation wa found between the relative amplitude of the B-wave elicited by the 5 degree timulu and the viual acuity (r = .918, P = .0005).
Concluion
In eye with an ERM and an MPH, the viual acuity i generally correlated with the OCT image. Macular function of eye with an MPH reemble eye with an ERM without an MPH. The effect of the ERM appear to be different on the bae and parafovea of the MPH.
