Abstract :
Purpoe To tet whether rigid ga permeable (RGP) contact len wear can reduced the rate of myopia progreion in chool age children. Deign Randomized clinical trial. Method etting: ingle clinical center. tudy Population: Both eye of 428 ingaporean children. Incluion Criteria: 6 through 12 year of age with myopia between −1 and −4 diopter, atigmatim ≤ 2 diopter, no prior contact len wear, no other ocular pathologie.Intervention: pectacle or RGP len correction for myopia. After a 3-month adaptation period, 383 children were followed, and 298 (78%) remained after 24 month.Outcome meaure: Cycloplegic ubjective refraction, keratometry, and axial length meaured at 12 and 24 month. Reult Children who adapted to contact lene wore them for a median of 7 hour per day, but no more than 40% wore them at leat 8 hour per day, 7 day per week. pectacle were worn for a median of 15 hour per day at the time of the 24-month follow-up. There wa an increae in the pherical equivalent of −1.33 and −1.28 diopter (P = .64), and axial length increaed by 0.84 and 0.79 mm (P = .38) over 2 year among children randomized to contact lene and pectacle, repectively. Adjutment for baeline difference between the group and for hour per day of contact len wear did not alter thee finding. Concluion Rigid ga permeable lene did not low the rate of myopia progreion, even among children who ued them regularly and conitently. It i unlikely that thi intervention hold promie a a method by which to low the rate of progreion of myopia in children.
