Abstract :
Purpoe
To decribe the incidence, clinical coure, and outcome of endophthalmiti in patient treated with a ganciclovir implant.
Deign
Retropective review of cae identified from a clinical urvey.
Method
Cae of endophthalmiti were identified from a urvey of 30 clinical practice known to treat a large number of patient with cytomegaloviru retiniti.
Reult
Twenty-four cae of endophthalmiti were identified from 5,185 implant performed (incidence, 0.46%). Final viual acuity ranged from 20/20 to no light perception, with 50% (12/24) eeing light perception or wore. Vitreou culture revealed taphylococcu epidermidi in 29% (7/24) of patient, wherea other gram-poitive organim were reponible in 42% (10/24) of cae. In the remaining 29% (7/24) of cae, no organim were cultured; thee cae exhibited a better viual outcome (P = .007). ix of the eight late-onet cae were aociated with wound problem uch a implant trut or uture expoure. There wa no ignificant relationhip between implant removal and final viual acuity.
Concluion
Endophthalmiti i an infrequent but potentially devatating complication aociated with placement of a ganciclovir implant.
