Abstract :
Purpoe
To analyze outcome of lacrimal bypa urgery with the Leter Jone tube and to determine the level of patient atifaction.
Deign
Interventional cae erie.
Method
We retropectively analyzed the outcome of 49 patient (42 patient) who underwent conjunctivodacryocytorhinotomy between 1984 and 2002. Data were obtained from medical record, emitructured phone interview, and written quetionnaire.
Reult
The caue of lacrimal obtruction were idiopathic and trauma, congenital agenei, infection, inflammation, herpe, baal cell carcinoma, radiation therapy, penicillin-induced teven-Johnon yndrome, ytemic chemotherapy, and facial nerve paly. Patient had undergone previou failed lacrimal urgery in 21% of cae. Complete or ignificant improvement of epiphora wa achieved in 94% of cae. Bet reult were obtained for trauma and herpetic obtruction. Complication were frequent and included extruion, recurrent extruion, malpoition, obtruction, dicomfort, infection, and diplopia. Of the 32 patient who were interviewed, 70% were atified with the reult, 35% reported tube maintenance to be troubleome, and all patient were pleaed with the ethetic of the Jone tube.
Concluion
Conjunctivodacryocytorhinotomy with the inertion of a Jone tube can be expected to improve epiphora ignificantly in mot cae and remain the tandard treatment for canalicular obtruction. Complication occur in mot cae, requiring replacement, repoitioning, and cleaning of the tube by the ophthalmologit over an indefinite period of time. Depite frequent complication, patient will uually be atified if they obtain a comfortable, dry eye. If, however, a completely dry eye i not achieved, frequent complication may contribute to patient diatifaction.
