Abstract :
Purpoe
To invetigate the determinant of participation in daily activitie in people with impaired viion uing the Impact of Viion Impairment (IVI) intrument.
Deign
Cro-ectional tudy.
Method
We recruited 319 participant with no viion rehabilitation hitory, ditance viual acuity (VA) <6/12 (better eye), the ability to convere in Englih, and 18 year or older. Participant completed the 32-item IVI quetionnaire and provided demographic, peronal, cultural, and environmental detail on viion-related functioning. Viual acuity data were either abtracted from the participantʹ file or aeed by qualified peronnel. Participant alo completed the F-12 to evaluate phyical (PC-12) and mental health (MC-12).
Reult
The area of greatet retriction of participation were aociated with reading, outdoor mobility, participation in leiure activitie, and hopping. In tepwie linear regreion preenting VA, the PC-12 and MC-12 explained the variance in leiure and work (60 participant or 19%), conumer and ocial interaction (92 participant or 30%), houehold and peronal care (76 participant or 24%), mobility (92 participant or 30%), emotional reaction to viual lo and (106 participant or 33%), and total IVI core (114 participant or 36%). Having age-related macular degeneration contributed marginally to the IVI domain and total core (P < .05–.01), except for the emotional domain. Belonging to a ocial group explained 3% and 2% of the variance in the conumer and ocial interaction and emotional domain, repectively (P < .05).
Concluion
Ditance VA and phyical and mental health explained more than a third of the variance of the total core, uggeting that an intervention aimed at improving quality of life may include trategie to improve not only viion-related rehabilitation but alo mental and phyical health.
