Abstract :
Purpoe
Factor XII deficiency i among the coagulation diorder that have been implicated in major thromboembolic event. However, little i known about an aociation of thi coagulation diorder and retinal veel occluion. In the current tudy, we invetigated the prevalence of factor XII deficiency in patient with retinal vein occluion (RVO) with reference to age and cardiovacular rik factor.
Deign
Cro-ectional tudy.
Method
A cohort of 150 conecutive patient with central or branch retinal vein occluion and 135 ubject matched for age and gender were propectively creened for factor XII deficiency. Both cohort were divided into two ubgroup (≤45 or >45 year), depending on the patientʹ age at the time of the RVO or a previou thromboembolic event.
Reult
Overall, factor XII deficiency wa found to be preent in 14 (9.3%) of 150 patient and in 1 (0.7%) of 135 control (P = .0009). Patient age ≤45 year at the time of the RVO or a previou thromboembolic event wa aociated with a high prevalence of factor XII deficiency (18%). By contrat, only 5 (5%) of 100 patient >45 year (P = .016) and none of the young control (P = .0001) teted poitive for factor XII deficiency. The prevalence among patient >45 year wa imilar to that found in age-matched control (2%; P = .66).
Concluion
Our reult indicate that factor XII deficiency i highly prevalent in RVO patient ≤45 year of age. By contrat, the prevalence of factor XII deficiency in RVO patient older than 45 year appear to be imilar to that een in healthy individual.
