Abstract :
Purpoe Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) ha been demontrated to uppre ocular angiogenei in everal animal model. In thi tudy, we ought to meaure the level of PEDF and vacular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the vitreou of patient with and without ocular neovacular diorder. Deign Cae-control tudy of patient undergoing intraocular urgery for a variety of neovacular and nonneovacular condition. Method Vitreou ample were collected from 65 eye of 65 patient with no neovacular diorder (n = 24), choroidal neovacularization (n = 9), active proliferative diabetic retinopathy (n = 16), and inactive proliferative diabetic retinopathy (n = 16). The level of VEGF and PEDF in thee vitreou ample were determined by enzyme-linked immunoorbent aay. Reult The VEGF level were at or below the level of detectability in the reference and choroidal neovacularization group. The VEGF level were ignificantly elevated in both the active and inactive PDR group, and ignificantly higher in the active PDR group a compared with the inactive PDR group. The PEDF level, which were preent at relatively high concentration in all group, were higher in patient with active PDR compared with the control and choroidal neovacularization group. Concluion High level of immunoreactive PEDF are preent in the vitreou of individual with or without ocular neovacularization, but PEDF level are ignificantly higher in patient with active PDR compared with patient with choroidal neovacularization or nonneovacular retinal dieae. Although thee reult do not preclude the poibility that endogenou PEDF help to modulate ocular neovacularization, they do not upport ichemia-induced downregulation of PEDF a a mechanim for uch modulation.
