Purpoe To evaluate the independent prognotic factor for urvival, metatai, local recurrence, and enucleation in patient who had undergone proton-beam therapy for poterior uveal melanoma. Deign Interventional cae erie. Method In thi retropective tudy, 224 conecutive incident cae were treated at the Biomedical Cyclotron Centre (Nice, France) from June 1991 to December 1997. Overall, metatai-free, local recurrence-free, and enucleation-free urvival rate were calculated according to the Kaplan-Meier method uing the log-rank tet. The multivariate prognotic analyi wa performed uing the Cox proportional hazard model. Reult The 5-year overall urvival rate wa 78.1% (E: 3.7%). A larget baal tumor diameter (LTD) below 10 mm and female ex were independently aociated with a better prognoi. The 5-year metatai-free urvival rate wa 75.6% (E: 3.6%). Only an LTD above 10 mm and ciliary body involvement were independently aociated with metatai. Ten patient (4.5%) had a local recurrence, which wa correlated with the rik of metatai (P = .045). The 5-year enucleation-free urvival rate wa 69.6% (E: 4.0%). Once again, an LTD below 10 mm and female ex were predictive of a better prognoi. Concluion Our reult with proton-beam therapy correpond to thoe reported in the literature. Thi treatment trategy i afe and yield predictably good reult. In addition to the two independent prognotic factor for urvival and metatai, namely LTD and ciliary body involvement, ex alo had a ignificant impact in our cae erie, but the clinical relevance of thi finding i unknown.
