Abstract :
Purpoe The prophylaxi potential of the topical antibiotic, 0.5% moxifloxacin (Vigamox), wa evaluated to prevent endophthalmiti after bacterial anterior chamber challenge in a rabbit model. Deign An in vivo laboratory invetigation. Method Three regimen of topical 0.5% moxifloxacin were teted for prophylaxi to prevent endophthalmiti: (1) (full prophylaxi) moxifloxacin drop every 15 minute for 1 hour (five drop), anterior chamber challenge with 5 × 104 colony-forming unit of taphylococcu aureu, one drop of moxifloxacin, and four more drop applied over the next 24 hour; (2) (preprophylaxi) prechallenge prophylaxi, . aureu challenge, and no potchallenge prophylaxi; and (3) (potprophylaxi) no prechallenge prophylaxi, . aureu challenge, and potchallenge prophylaxi. A aline control wa teted concurrently in all three experiment. At 24 hour after injection, the eye were evaluated by lit lamp in a maked fahion for clinical ign of endophthalmiti, and the anterior and poterior chamber were cultured for bacteria. Reult The median clinical core for the moxifloxacin group were ignificantly lower than the aline group for all three treatment regimen. The median clinical core for the full prophylaxi regimen wa ignificantly lower than the preprophylaxi and potprophylaxi regimen alone. The anterior and poterior chamber were negative for . aureu in all three moxifloxacin treatment regimen. Concluion In a rabbit model, a “proof of principle” wa demontrated that topical antibiotic therapy pre- and potintraocular bacterial challenge could prevent bacterial endophthalmiti. urgical prophylaxi with topical 0.5% moxifloxacin (Vigamox) may prove to be a valuable adjunct for the prevention of endophthalmiti.
