Abstract :
Purpoe
To determine the change in functional viion that occur with cataract urgery in a group of monocular patient compared with a group of binocularly ighted control ubject.
Deign
A retropective cae-control tudy.
Method
tudy ubject compried 100 functionally monocular patient who underwent cataract urgery at the Jule tein Eye Intitute between 1996 and 2002. Control ubject were 100 binocularly ighted patient, matched to tudy ubject by age, ex, and timing of urgery. A ingle ophthalmologit performed all of the operation uing an ultraonic phacoemulification technique. Bet-corrected viual acuity (BCVA) wa meaured before and after urgery uing a conventional viual acuity monitor. elf-reported viual function wa aeed before and after urgery uing the Viual Function 14 (VF-14) quetionnaire. Paired t tet were ued to report tatitical ignificance.
Reult
The monocular group had ignificantly wore mean BCVA than the binocular group before and after urgery, but the improvement experienced by the two group wa tatitically inditinguihable (P = .913). Mean global VF-14 core wa ignificantly wore for the monocular than the binocular group before and after urgery, but the monocular group experienced a ignificantly greater improvement (P = .00164) in VF-14 following urgery (20.4 point for the monocular group v 10.1 point for the binocular group).
Concluion
Monocular patient report twice a much improvement in functional viion a binocular patient depite imilar BCVA gain. Thi may be becaue monocular patient had cataract urgery on their better-eeing eye, wherea binocular patient typically had urgery on their poorer-eeing eye.
