Abstract :
Purpoe To analyze the baeline finding predictive of the ize and type of the late exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) leion. Deign Obervational cae erie. Method Retropective tudy. ETTING: Univerity clinic referral practice. TUDY POPULATION: The record of 167 conecutive patient initially diagnoed with recent choroidal neovacularization (CNV) related to AMD were analyzed 4.8 to 9.2 (mean 6.8) year after baeline. Of 121 patient till living, 74 attended the reexamination. After excluion, data from 61 patient were analyzed. OBERVATION PROCEDURE: From the fundu photograph and fluorecein angiographic image taken at baeline and at follow-up the ize and component of AMD leion were meaured. The preence of hemorrhage, pigment epithelial detachment (PED), claic CNV, laer treatment, and involvement of the fellow eye were recorded at baeline. MAIN OUTCOME MEAURE: Leion ize, increae in leion ize, peritent exudative proce, ubretinal fibroi, and chorioretinal anatomoi at the follow-up examination. Reult Large leion (P < .001) and CNV (P = .003) ize, and the preence of occult, no claic CNV (P = .013) at baeline predict a large leion at follow-up. Other factor predicting a large leion were ubfoveal (P = .019) and bilateral leion (P = .017) and the preence of hemorrhage (P = .012) at baeline. A large (P = .040) and bilateral leion (P = .040) and hemorrhage (P = .011) at baeline were correlated with ubretinal fibroi at follow-up. Occult leion (P = .002) at baeline were correlated with chorioretinal anatomoi at follow-up. Concluion The type and ize of the late AMD leion can partly be predicted from baeline characteritic.
