Abstract :
Purpoe
To compare optical coherence tomography (OCT) and confocal canning laer tomography (cLT) for quantitative retinal thickne mapping of the macula and their ability to detect macular edema.
Deign
Propective, comparative, clinical obervational tudy.
Method
The tudy population of 138 eye (97 patient) wa divided into a tudy group coniting of 45 (32.6%) eye with macular edema and a control group coniting of 93 (67.4%) eye without macular edema. All patient underwent OCT and cLT of the macula. Retinal thickne meaurement obtained by OCT were compared with ignal width and edema index, determined by cLT.
Reult
The OCT meaurement and cLT edema index were ignificantly (P < .001) correlated with each other. Correlation coefficient decreaed (P < .001) with increaing diameter of the meaurement circle. In the macular edema group, correlation coefficient were ignificantly (P < .001) higher than in the control group. To eparate the tudy and control group, receiver operator characteritic curve covered a larger area for OCT meaurement than for cLT meaurement. Retinal thickne meaurement and edema index correlate with viual acuity (correlation coefficient r = −.653 for OCT, r = −.608 for cLT; P < .001).
Concluion
Macular edema can be quantitatively mapped by OCT and cLT. The retinal thickne and edema index meaurement correlate with viual acuity. The fat and tandard examination mode of OCT give imilar meaurement. Both OCT and cLT can differentiate between eye with and without macular edema, with OCT howing a higher predictive value.
