Abstract :
Purpoe
To compare the nocturnal effect of once-daily timolol and latanoprot on intraocular preure (IOP) in patient with ocular hypertenion or early glaucomatou change.
Deign
Propective, open-label, experimental tudy with croover deign.
Method
Eighteen patient with ocular hypertenion or early glaucomatou change (aged 41 to 79 year) each received topical treatment with timolol (0.5% Timoptic-XE), latanoprot (0.005% Xalatan), and no IOP-lowering medication, for at leat 4 week. Timolol wa given once in the morning upon awakening and latanoprot once in the evening at bedtime. At the end of each treatment period, the patient wa houed in a leep laboratory for 24 hour and IOP wa meaured every 2 hour uing a pneumatonometer. Meaurement were taken itting and upine during the 16-hour diurnal/wake period and only upine during the 8-hour nocturnal/leep period. Mean diurnal and nocturnal IOP level were compared among the treatment with timolol, latanoprot, and no medication.
Reult
In the diurnal period, the mean IOP under the timolol or the latanoprot treatment wa ignificantly le than the mean IOP under no medication in both the itting and the upine poition. There wa no tatitical difference between the timolol and latanoprot treatment. In the nocturnal period, upine IOP with timolol treatment wa not different from the upine IOP with no medication but wa ignificantly higher than upine IOP with the latanoprot treatment.
Concluion
Although both once-daily timolol and latanoprot were effective in lowering IOP during the diurnal period, only latanoprot reduced IOP during the nocturnal period.
