Abstract :
Purpoe
To invetigate the oxygen permeability (Dk) and oxygen tranmiibility (Dk/t) of amniotic membrane (AM), and tear oxygen tenion beneath AM in rabbit.
Deign
Experimental tudy.
Method
The water content of AM wa meaured to calculate Dk and Dk/t, and compared with thoe of a therapeutic oft contact len (TCL).The tear oxygen tenion beneath AM and TCL wa alo meaured in four male albino rabbit.
Reult
The average water content of AM wa ignificantly higher than that of TCL (96.8 ± 0.8% (mean ± D) v 78%, P = .0006), giving rie to a ignificantly higher Dk and Dk/t in AM a compared with TCL (142.8 ± 4.7 v 65.3, repectively, P = .0012, and 92.9 ± 3.0 v 29.7, repectively, P = .0008). The average tear oxygen tenion under AM wa alo higher than TCL (94.9 ± 2.9 v 59.1 ± 4.9 mm Hg, P = .0006).
Concluion
Thee finding upport the rationale of uing AM a a uperior bandage in treating peritent corneal epithelial defect or ulcer.
