Abstract :
Purpoe
To determine whether len edge deign or anterior capule overlap on the intraocular len (IOL) ha greater effect on poterior capule opacification (PCO).
Deign
Retropective cohort clinical tudy.
Method
Retropective. ETTING: Academic clinical practice.PATIENT POPULATION: The patient population conited of 259 uncomplicated urgical patient (259 eye) with no confounding comorbidity and at leat 1 year of follow-up after urgical placement of a ilicone or hydrophobic acrylic len. OBERVATION PROCEDURE: Digital retroilluminated photograph were taken to acertain PCO, anterior capular opacification (ACO), previou neodymium:YAG capulotomy and degree of anterior capule overlap on the IOL optic. MAIN OUTCOME MEAURE: PCO, ACO, YAG capulotomy rate, and anterior capule overlap on the IOL optic.
Reult
One hundred forty-eight digital image (74 ilicone and 74 acrylic) were meaurable for both anterior capule overlap and PCO. Complete 360 degree of anterior capule overlap on the IOL wa aociated with decreaed PCO (P = <.001). A ignificant negative correlation wa found between the degree of anterior capule overlap and PCO (P = <.001). Evaluation of PCO, and YAG capulotomy rate were imilar between acrylic and ilicone lene. Minimal anterior capule overlap may alo be aociated with PCO prevention.
Concluion
Implanting a len with complete anterior capule overlap on the IOL wa found to ignificantly reduce PCO, which advantage appeared to be greater than PCO prevention by a truncated, harp edge IOL deign.
