Abstract :
Purpoe
The purpoe of thi tudy wa to determine the effect that vitreou preentation (VP) during extracapular cataract urgery ha on patientʹ 1-year potoperative viion.
Deign
The tudy wa a propective, long-term, clinical trial.
Method
The tudy took place at 19 Department of Veteran Affair medical center. Patient having VP during cataract urgery and receiving a poterior chamber (PC) intraocular len (IOL) (230 patient) were propectively compared with a 5% random ample of nonvitreou preentation (NVP) cataract urgery patient (521 patient). Bet-corrected viual acuity (BCVA) at 1 year wa obtained by a maked, certified examiner.
Reult
There wa no tatitical difference (P = .089) between the VP patient receiving PC IOL and the NVP patient in percentage of patient having BCVA of 20/40 or better at 1 year (91.1% v 94.9%). There were ignificantly more PC IOL VP patient than NVP patient with BCVA of 20/50 or wore at ome time during the firt potoperative year (21.6% v 10.9%; P = .0003), ignificantly fewer with BCVA of 20/20 or better at 1 year (27.8% v 38.8%; P = .013), and ignificantly more with cytoid macular edema (11.5% v 3.6%; P = .0002), retinal detachment (4.3% v 0.2%; P = .0002), and uveiti (3.4% v 0.6%; P = .012). The NVP patient rated their viion a very good or excellent ignificantly more often than the VP patient (71% v 58%; P = .025).
Concluion
Vitreou preentation during extracapular cataract urgery lead to omewhat wore overall outcome in patient, although the majority of patient with VP do reaonably well.
