Analyi of melanoma cell type in uveal melanoma following treatment failure

Purpoe To determine whether an increae (or progreion) in the degree of malignancy according to cytologic or hitopathologic criteria correponded with failure of intraocular melanoma control. Deign Retropective cae control tudy from a ingle intitution. Method Uveal melanoma patient had either fine-needle apiration biopy followed by irradiation and later enucleation or an eyewall reection followed by enucleation. The obervation procedure were erial hitology or cytopathology and hitology, reanalyzed in a maked manner. The main outcome meaure were change in the predominant tumor cell type, local tumor control, and metatae. Reult There wa not a ignificant correlation between a change in melanoma cell type and failure to control intraocular melanoma. imilarly, the latency between treatment and enucleation wa actually le (but not tatitically o) in tumor that howed no increae in melanoma malignancy cell type compared with thoe that had a more malignant cell type on erial examination. Concluion There wa no correlation between a change to more a malignant cell type and local control failure in patient treated either with radiation or eyewall reection for uveal melanoma.
