Abstract :
The author evaluated the long-term effect of the Implantable Contact Len (ICL) on corneal endothelium. Endothelial cell image were collected in the central region of the cornea before urgery at 12, 24, and 36 month after urgery, with a few at 48 month. The cumulative cell lo wa between 8.4% and 8.9% over the firt three year and between 8.4% and 9.5% over the firt four year depending on the method of calculation. The cell lo between baeline and three month wa 2.1%; three month and one year, 0.9%; one year and two year, 2.3%; and three year and four year, −0.1%. The coefficient of variation decreaed over the coure of the tudy, and the proportion of cae with hexagonal cell increaed lightly. Cell lo between one and three year i mot readily explained by prolonged corneal endothelial cell remodeling following the urgical procedure rather than ongoing cell lo. Regardle of the caue of the change in endothelial cell denity over the firt three year, the available four-year data ugget there wa no ongoing chronic lo.—Michael D. Wagoner
