  • Abstract
    Purpoe To evaluate the variou form of clinical preentation, the potential of growth, the rik of functional lo and the poibility of malignant tranformation of optic dik melanocytoma in European patient. Deign Retropective obervational cae control tudy. Method Evaluation of 37 cae of optic dik melanocytoma identified in the computer file of the ocular oncology unit of Jule Gonin Hopital to determine the clinical preentation of thee tumor and the rik of complication. Reult The tumor wa aymptomatic in 28 cae. Viual acuity wa normal in 26 cae, ubnormal in 10 cae, and in one cae it wa reduced to 0.1. Viual field defect were oberved in 19 cae; the ize and extent of the tumor and the degree of papilledema appeared to influence the everity of the viual field defect. Tumor growth wa demontrated in 6 of the 9 cae in which follow-up wa for at leat ix year. In two cae there wa preumed malignant tranformation that wa treated by accelerated proton beam radiotherapy. Concluion Melanocytoma in white European and thoe of European derivation are rarely ymptomatic, have only a moderate effect on viual function and how a low rate of progreion over long obervation. The rik of tumor progreion, although ometime occurring a much a everal year after the initial diagnoi, jutifie a cautiou approach with long-term regular urveillance of thee patient.
