Abstract :
Purpoe To ae the aociation of variou ociodemographic factor and early and advanced (geographic atrophy, exudative) age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in Latino. Deign Population-baed, cro-ectional tudy Method The tudy population included Latino (primarily Mexican-American) aged 40 year and older living in La Puente, California. ociodemographic factor, obtained from an interviewer-adminitered quetionnaire, included age, ex, Native American ancetry, acculturation, country of birth, employment, income, marital tatu, health inurance, and education level. All participant underwent complete ophthalmic examination. AMD wa diagnoed from tereocopic macular photograph. Univariate and multivariable logitic regreion wa ued to ae aociation between ociodemographic factor and AMD. Reult Gradable retinal photograph from 5875 participant were included. Mean participant age wa 54.9 year, 42% were male, and 5% had Native American ancetry. tepwie logitic regreion analye indicated that age, ex, and being born in the United tate were aociated with early AMD (odd ratio [OR] = 1.8, 1.8, and 0.80, repectively). Native American ancetry wa the aociated with any advanced AMD and geographic atrophy (OR = 3.8 and 16.4, repectively). Family hitory of AMD wa alo aociated with geographic atrophy (OR = 28.1). Acculturation wa not aociated with AMD. Concluion Independent rik indicator for the variou type of AMD include older age, male ex, being born outide of the United tate, Native American ancetry, and a family hitory of AMD. Thee rik factor were independent of other poible behavioral factor uch a moking and alcohol conumption.
