Abstract :
Purpoe
To evaluate the ocular urface inflammatory repone to the preence of preervative in nonelective beta-blocker eyedrop.
Deign
Propective, croover, ingle-maked, randomized clinical tudy.
Method
tudy population: Twenty primary open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertenive patient were divided in two group, one treated with preervative-free timolol 0.5% (group 1) and the other with preerved timolol 0.5% (group 2) eyedrop. After 60 day of therapy and 3 more week of wahout, the two group witched to the other therapy. procedure: At each viit, baal tear ample were collected from the inferior conjunctival fornix for the determination of interleukin (IL)-1β tear concentration by an enzyme-linked immunoorbent aay. Intraocular preure meaurement, conjunctival hyperemia, uperficial punctate keratiti, and tear film breakup time were evaluated. main outcome meaure: IL-1β concentration in tear following the ue of preerved eyedrop.
Reult
IL-1β tear concentration increaed ignificantly in both group, compared with baeline value, during preerved timolol therapy. There were no tatitically ignificant change in hyperemia and uperficial punctate keratiti throughout the tudy in either group. A tatitically ignificant breakup time reduction wa oberved in both group after 30 day and after 60 day of preerved therapy.
Concluion
The ue of preervative in timolol 0.5% eyedrop lead to tear film intability and ocular urface inflammatory change documented by a reduction of breakup time and an increae of IL-1β tear concentration. Preervative-free beta-blocker are preferable for long-term hypotenive therapy to prevent ocular urface inflammation.
