Homocyteine and retinal vein occluion: A Population-baed tudy

Purpoe To report population data on the aociation between homocyteinemia and retinal vein occluion (RVO). Deign Cro-ectional, population-baed tudy. Method Total erum homocyteine (tHcy) wa etimated in ubject attending the econd Blue Mountain Eye tudy (BME) (n = 3509, aged >49 year). It aociation with RVO (graded from retinal photograph) wa examined. Reult Homocyteine wa more trongly aociated with RVO in younger than older participant. In thoe aged <70 year, homocyteine level >15 μmol/l were aociated with increaed odd of RVO, odd ratio (OR) 3.76; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.06–13.40, in multivariable-adjuted analye. Each 1 μmol/l increae in homocyteine wa aociated with a 7% increaed odd of RVO, OR 1.07; CI 0.99–1.17 (P = .08). Concluion Thi population-baed tudy howed that elevated erum homocyteine i aociated with the preence of RVO, independent of other rik factor.
